Sacred Life Sunday - Pursuing Our Interests

Daily Meditation from
Keepers of the Wisdom
Reflections from Lives Well Lived
by Karen Casey

"Life is getting to be different, but I still have goals set and projects. I've got a closet full of them." Alice Merryman

Laziness is the prize some claim when they get old. That's okay if it really pleases them. However, most people feel better when they are involved in something beyond themselves. One of the most treasured gifts of older age is that we have the freedom to pursue whatever draws our interest. While working long hours and raising a family, we had to shelve some dreams for a better time. The better time has arrived.

Not everyone has a closet full of projects, but we all have one or two ideas we've thought about pursuing. Maybe we've considered taking a drawing class or chronicling the history of our family. Gardening is rewarding for those who do it. Agencies of all kinds need our help as volunteers. We still have our wisdom to contribute. What's most often needed is mere common sense. We don't lack for that, certainly, or we'd not have arrived at this rich old age."

"I'll talk with a friend about my life today.
New ideas will come to me.
New ideas mean new directions, too."

I can't imagine ever not having something I want to do--in fact, when I think of retirement, I think "time for the stuff I want to do." It seems like doing nothing would get very boring, very quickly!

Thanks, I needed this. With two young sons, I often find myself putting my interests on hold, but if I can even do them for a little bit a week it will make a difference for me.

Zamejias – Thanks for your comment here and for sharing the award with me. I passed it on yesterday at Small Reflections along with the Round the World Friendship tag for MemeMonday. Perhaps I’ll share the award here this week too.

Karen – I couldn’t agree with you more … and I just don’t understand folks who are ‘bored’ or can’t find something of interest to do with their time. I’m just grateful to have free time these days because while I worked life felt way too busy all the time.

Rose – Thanks for your kind words. I’m happy to have discovered your blog too.

Yertle – You’re welcome. I know what you mean about putting your interests ‘on hold’ and I wish I’d taken more time for ‘me and my interests’ earlier in my life. I’m happy my post ‘resonated’ with you today.

I appreciate each of you taking time to visit and share your thoughts here. I hope you each have a delightful day!

Yes!!! The way we can add this blog of yours is to make sure that you either have a graphic LINKED to the main Bloggers Over 50 site, OR the drop down blogroll here in your sidebar somewhere! [directions are on the main page]

Once you do that, for the bloggers who use the blogroll to peruse all of us bloggers over 50, then I will add this blog also!!

Let me know.

Hootin’ Anni – Thanks so much for your speedy response to my request. I’m glad I finally know enough about how to do these things that I was able to add the links here to my sidebar without much difficulty. I couldn’t have done it a few months ago … so I guess I’m learning all the time. Having two Blogger sites makes it a challenge for folks to keep track of what’s where … and I suspect some of the Over 50 Bloggers would enjoy this blog more than my other one, so I’m happy they’ll have direct access now.

Mike – I appreciate your visit and kind compliments. It’s always a pleasure to find a comment from you because I know you're dealing with challenges.

Hugs and blessings to you both!

I love your point here. I do think people feel better when they are invloved...in something. I have a "closet full"!!! I don't know how you can keep up with two sites, I have trouble with only one! hehehehehe. I appreciate all the thought you put into your posts, it's inspiring! HUGS!

Greatfullivin - Thanks so much for your visit and comment here today. I've got many 'closets full' and that's a bit 'worrisome' at times. Now that I’m ‘happily retired’ I do things at a slower pace these and enjoy everything a bit more. As for keeping up … you’ll note I only post on this blog 3-4 times a week these days and that helps ;--)
