Belated Monday Motivator & Simply Kind Tuesdays

Once again I wish to share with you an email with a brief inspirational video link I received this morning. I hope the practical ideas within the presentation speak to YOU as they do to me.

"Dear Virginia,

It started with a piece of trash.

Matthew Emerzian, a successful music industry executive in Los Angeles, was walking back to his office with a co-worker one afternoon in 2004 when he stopped to pick up a plastic fountain drink cover from the sidewalk and put it in a nearby garbage bin.

"My co-worker quickly asked me what I was doing," Emerzian recalled. "I explained what I thought to be the obvious, but apparently I was wrong." To the co-worker, litter simply belonged to the litterer, not to the population as a whole.

"I explained to him that litter and pollution are everyone's problem not just the person who couldn't find the trash can for their cup lid. He profoundly responded with 'Dude, you're weird.'"

Emerzian, now 38, walked back to his office both angry and sad.

"I couldn't believe that someone could remove themselves so far from the greater good of our world."

Matt began to think, 'what if everyone in the country picked up one piece of litter on the same day.' Or 10 pieces! The math was easy, yet so powerful. He then began to think of a few other easy things that 300 million Americans could do to make a difference.

From this, a great idea was born. He called his friend, Kelly Bozza, and told her that he wanted to write a book about how all of us can make a difference with our lives. Within a week, they had over 100 items on their list and were ready to start writing.

Their book, titled Every Monday Matters...52 Ways to Make a Difference, has sold 120,000 copies. The ideas are simple - small acts that collectively add up to an enormous impact for the greater good.

Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Everyone has the power of greatness; not for fame, but greatness. Because greatness is determined by service."

To celebrate the release of our new movie, the next 500 orders of Every Monday Matters will receive a free Simple Truths eco-shopping bag. By shopping with a reusable bag, you can use 1,000 fewer plastic or paper bags this year, especially shopping for groceries.

All the best,

Simply Kind Tuesday - Choosing Compassion

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
If you want to be happy, practice compassion." the Dalai Lama

"During my second year of nursing school our professor gave us a quiz. I breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was a joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade. "Absolutely," the professor said. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello." I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy." Joann C. Jones

BelatedMondayMotivator & SimplyKindTuesday

Once again I wish to share with you an email with a brief inspirational video link I received this morning. I hope the quotes within the presentation speak to YOU as they do to me.

"Dear storyteller,

One of my all time favorite quotes comes from one of my all time favorite people, Zig Ziglar. He said...

"People often tell me that motivation doesn't last, and I tell them that bathing doesn't either. That's why I recommend it daily."

That's what this beautiful, oversized coffee table book is all about...daily reinforcement to keep you positive and always moving in the right direction. What a great way to kick off 2009!

Zig Ziglar is a legend in the field of motivation and personal development. His new book Inspiration...365 Days a Year, features an inspirational quote for each day of the year and breathtaking nature photos throughout.

This collection of quotes features some from Zig himself, and many other favorites that have inspired him throughout his life. It is something that you, or anyone you give it to, will treasure.

I'm very proud to present our new movie: Inspiration...365 Days a Year, by Zig Ziglar. So sit back, turn up your speakers and click here to watch.

And, if you're inspired, don't forget to forward this email to a friend or co-worker. A little "shot of inspiration" can be a wonderful thing!

Live with Passion,
Mac Anderson
Founder, Simple Truths"

I've viewed it three times already this morning and am sure I'll return to it repeatedly ... just because I want to keep myself 'on track' in 2009.

Simply Kind on Tuesdays - Transforming Ourselves

"Life is mostly froth and bubble,
Two things stand like stone,
Kindness in another's trouble,
Courage in your own."
Adam Lindsay Gordon

As 2008 draws to a close, I find myself thinking about how I choose to use my mind and energies in 2009 and I've been listening to audiotapes ... watching videoclips ... reading & writing ... meditating as I walk, garden, visit blogs, etc.  This clip is about 20 minutes long but adds the weight of science to the idea that our attention can be shifted and minds altered through meditation, and encourages personal experimentation.

I believe that 'change' is the one 'constant' to be counted upon, and taking charge of that change begins with ourselves.  Rather than focusing on 'fixing' others, by 'removing the log from our own eye' as we're told to do in the Bible we 'become the change we want to see in the world' as Gandhi suggested.  Therefore, I commend this video (or others at TED that seem more relevant to your circumstances) to you when time permits.

Habits of Happiness or Well-Being

Information from TED.com about ...
Matthieu Ricard: Monk, author, photographer
Sometimes called the "happiest man in the world," Matthieu Ricard is a Buddhist monk, author and photographer.

Why you should listen to him:

After training in biochemistry at the Institute Pasteur, Matthieu Ricard left science behind to move to the Himalayas and become a Buddhist monk -- and to pursue happiness, both at a basic human level and as a subject of inquiry. Achieving happiness, he has come to believe, requires the same kind of effort and mind training that any other serious pursuit involves.

His deep and scientifically tinged reflections on happiness and Buddhism have turned into several books, including The Quantum and the Lotus: A Journey to the Frontiers Where Science and Buddhism Meet. At the same time, he also makes sensitive and jaw-droppingly gorgeous photographs of his beloved Tibet and the spiritual hermitage where he lives and works on humanitarian projects.

His latest book on happiness is Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill; his latest book of photographs is Tibet: An Inner Journey.
"Matthieu Ricard, French translator and right-hand man for the Dalai Lama, has been the subject of intensive clinical tests at the University of Wisconsin, as a result of which he is frequently described as the happiest man in the world."
Robert Chalmers, The Independent

Wednesday morning addendum
What follows is a 'Message from the Universe' that arrived in email this morning and I feel moved to share ... just because:
"If it's not yet obvious to you, the real reason for this season is you, Storyteller. A more perfect child of the Universe has never lived. Until now, only a celebration cloaked in myth and mystery could hint at your sublime heritage and divine destiny. You are life's prayer of becoming and its answer. The first light at the dawn of eternity, drawn from the ether, so that the Universe might know its depths, discover its heights, and frolic in endless seas of blessed emotion.

A pioneer into illusion, an adventurer into the unknown, and a lifter of veils. Courageous, heroic and exalted by billions in the unseen.

To give beyond reason. To care beyond hope. To love without limit. To reach, stretch, and dream, in spite of your fears. These are the hallmarks of divinity - traits of the immortal - your badges of honor. Wear them with a pride as great as the unspeakable pride we feel for you.

Your light has illuminated darkened paths, your gaze has lifted broken spirits, and already your life has changed the destiny of all who will ever follow.

This is the time of year we celebrate Storyteller.

Bowing before Greatness,
The Universe"

I submit that each of us can insert our name in place of 'storyteller' as we meditate on this message from Tut.

Simply Kind Tuesdays - Self Compassion

Week 4
As I explained last Tuesday, Claudia of Everyday Kindness has made some changes ... splitting the Everyday Kindness Challenge into two parts:

1. The original challenge to perform at least one act of kindness per day continues.

I happened upon a link to an article on 'self-compassion' at Mama's So Mindful recently and was reminded that until we're kind to ourselves, it can be difficult to practice kindness with others.
I commend this article and the accompanying website to you.

According to research by Dr. Kristin Neff, Associate Professor in Human Development at the University of Texas at Austin, there are three elements of self-compassion: Self-kindness, Common humanity, and Mindfulness.

The website provides information and tools for self-assessment.

Simply Kind Tuesdays - Giving Thanks

NaBloPoMo-Day18
Week 3
As I explained last Tuesday, Claudia of Everyday Kindness has made some changes ... splitting the Everyday Kindness Challenge into two parts:

1. The original challenge to perform at least one act of kindness per day continues.
2. The new challenge is 'Simply Kind Tuesdays' ... the goal of which is to increase awareness of the kindness that surrounds us.
I invite you to participate in either or both challenges as time & energy permit. Clicking on the Simply Kind and/or Everyday Kindness logos at the top and bottom of this page will take you to others participating.

I've written of this 'challenge' recently on both blogs, but in case you missed those posts (and because it's Simply Kind Tuesday today) ... here is something I'm doing that you might like to do as well as time permits.

I've posted this Giving Thanks Challenge Logo in my sidebar of both blogs & generated a list of things I'm thankful for underneath the logo in the sidebar of Small Reflections. I'm adding one more each day during the month of November.

I've written daily 'gratitude lists' in my journals for several decades and share periodically on this blog. After watching Yertle publish her 'gratitude lists' at Smile, Play, Dream over the past month or so, I've decided to continue this 'sidebar thankful practice' indefinitely ... moving each completed monthly list to a cumulative 'gratitude post' ... leaving a link to previous lists under new month's list.

Simply Kind Tuesdays - Honoring Veterans

NaBloPoMo-Day11

Today I encourage us all to ...
Veterans Day is celebrated officially at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and honors living & dead American veterans when a color guard composed of members from each of the military branches conducts a moving ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery.

Originally known as Armistice Day after being established by Congress following the end of World War I in 1926, it became a National Holiday 12 years later, shortly before World War II broke out in Europe in 1939. After WWII ended in 1947 legislation was introduced into Congress to change the name from Armistice to Veterans Day.

In 1957, President Eisenhower signed the bill proclaiming November 11th as Veterans day, calling upon Americans to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace. The intention is to thank all living veterans for their loyal, dedicated service to our country while remembering those who have died as well.

Posters selected from the Veterans Day Poster Gallery
